The Centers for New Horizons retained Hitchcock Design Group, in association with Holabird and Root, to transform their existing playground into a nature-based play environment with the goal of creating opportunities for children in an urban setting to interact with nature.

This repurposed space features play elements that include raised sensory planter beds, a music area with seating, a sand play area, and a “loose parts” play deck. Wood cookie steppers were also incorporated into the design to create a fun pathway for children to use. A wood playhouse is another component of the play area. In addition to being exposed to nature, children are also able to make art as well as engage in imaginative and constructive play.
