Facility expansions in urban environments, like the one in the neighborhood surrounding Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH), frequently pose a significant space challenge. In need of a new parking facility, NMH capitalized on an opportunity to also integrate a childcare center to further support its hospital staff. This unique care facility is centered around child-led and nature-based play elements that contribute to developmental growth.
To meet day care center outdoor activity space requirements, the roof of the parking facility was transformed into a combination intensive and extensive green roof, a portion of which may become a community garden in the future. The project scope included the design and documentation of the surrounding streetscape. The hospital’s existing streetscape standards, including light fixtures, fencing, planters and furniture, were applied to this project to visually connect this remote location with the main hospital campus.
