Hitchcock Design Group led a team of consultants in revitalizing a two-acre area into a civic park and community gateway for Lockport.
The design concept captures the Landing’s heritage as a key port along the Illinois and Michigan (I&M) Canal, along with Abraham Lincoln’s connection to the waterway. The sculpture of Lincoln was commissioned to serve as a dramatic focal point. The overall design of the park balances a large central lawn with smaller spaces for groups to gather or for vendors to set up during festivals and markets. The Foundation, which works with disadvantaged youths in Lockport area schools, was especially interested in incorporating a strong educational component within the design. To this end, numerous interpretive markers and exhibits were located at strategic places throughout the park.
The Lincoln Landing site was later designated as an officially-endorsed historic site of the Federal Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.
