Hitchcock Design Group completed a Master Plan for a continuous Riverwalk that runs along both sides of the Rock River through downtown Rockford. One aspect of the plan was a link between the Museum Campus and the adjacent river. To implement this link, the HDG team directed a public design charrette and coordinated with numerous stakeholders including the City of Rockford, Rockford Park District, and Museum representatives ultimately developing a contemporary design aesthetic that was purposely selected with the goal of promoting future economic development opportunities.
The City of Rockford applied for and received funding from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) to construct the first phase of improvements. HDG then teamed with McClure Engineering to design and engineer the first phase. During planning and schematic design, great care was taken to have minimal impact on the floodplain and floodway while still providing pedestrian access along the Rock River. Steep slopes were stabilized and many non-native plant species were cleared to open up previously blocked views. Site amenities include an outdoor classroom / amphitheater space that supports programmed uses by the Park District and adjacent Museums.
