“While concerns like climate resiliency and stormwater management are urgent, so is the need to provide outdoor spaces for leisure, recreation and entertainment, and make sure these spaces are inviting and accessible to everyone."

We couldn't agree more with the good folks at Recreation Management. Hitchcock Design Group Principal Lacey Lawrence elaborates on addressing environmental concerns while meeting public desires in their article, "Meeting Diverse Needs."

The Colton House Hotel is located in the trendy South Congress neighborhood of Austin, Texas. The heart of the hotel is the HDG-designed "Backyard," an outdoor space spanning 5,000-square feet. A spacious Trex deck is supported by a steel frame that spans the protected root zone of three 80-year-old heritage live oak trees.

A fire pit and naturally designed seating leads into The Lawn, an open area to play bocce ball, croquet, lawn bowling, and more. A cast-in-place concrete retaining wall with built-in seating allows the heated outdoor swimming pool to step down into the landscape and follow existing grade.

We're delighted the project has been chosen by Landscape Architect and Specifier News for a profile.

Bear’s Breeches. Foxglove. Mother-in-Law's Tongue. Scarlet Pimpernel. A rose by any other name...

Where would we be without plants? Simply put, we wouldn't be at all. Thanks, plants!

Nature-based play is unstructured play and exploration that is kid-led and builds upon previous experiences. Encouraging children to develop their own connections with the natural world allows them to be challenged physically and facilitates their emotional, social, and cognitive growth in ways that are often not met by traditional, manufactured playgrounds.

Connections with nature and family, multi-sensory stimulation, loose parts play (changing their surroundings), imaginative and role-playing, and graduated physical challenges put kids in contact with their natural environment, and ultimately, themselves.

Research from the Children and Nature Network and Chicago Wilderness Leave No Child Inside Initiative indicates that play in outdoor natural settings is essential to child development and lifelong learning and to fostering an appreciation of local environments and a desire to protect such spaces in the future.

Focused on offering behavioral health services for adults, adolescents and children in several locations, Rogers Memorial Hospital has long understood the importance of having therapeutic outdoor spaces for patients and residents to assist with their treatment. After completing the landscape master plan for the hospital’s 50 acre Oconomowoc, Wisconsin campus, Hitchcock Design Group was retained to design a therapeutic garden for the new Children and Adolescent Center that was built on the campus. The design of the garden was informed by soliciting input from the Doctor’s and Staff who treat the patients to insure that the therapeutic space led to the appropriate experiences and provide additional areas for programming for the patients. As the garden is for children and adolescents, items that appealed to their age level were also incorporated into the design while still being mindful of creating a place of healing and respite for them.
