The New Malcolm X City College of Chicago

The New Malcolm X College is the City College of Chicago’s (CCC) first major step in re-envisioning how to best deliver career education for high-demand jobs. Located in downtown Chicago, the goal for the school is to prepare students for a career in the medical sciences. To achieve this goal, the team was asked to create a campus with a strong, professional vibe and a “heart” while creating a neighborhood anchor. As part of the design team, Hitchcock Design Group developed the site plan and completed the construction documents for the hardscape and landscape for the four-block site. LEED Gold design solutions were incorporated throughout the project and a combined total of one-acre of green roofs were placed throughout the project. The 3rd floor green roof is considered the “heart” of the college and contains two custom seating areas that serve as outdoor classrooms, with the balance of the area being framed by seatwall planters and a mix of moveable tables and chairs. Onsite preschool is also offered on the campus with college students having the ability to take classes on preschool education. The MXC campus now serves as a community anchor and the spaces surrounding the buildings a home to walkways that provide opportunities for socialization and create the community anchor that was envisioned.
