Eric Hornig

Eric is a Senior Principal in the Recreation Studio at Hitchcock Design Group and a Licensed Landscape Architect. Since graduating from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture in 1993, he has dedicated more than 20 years to advancing the recreation industry and shaping outdoor environments across the country. Eric is widely recognized for his expertise in creating outdoor learning environments, with award-winning projects including The Morton Arboretum Children’s Garden, Bison’s Bluff, Bellaboos Imagination Garden, 95th Street Community Plaza, and Hawks Hollow. He has led project teams at scales ranging from individual site development to comprehensive planning, always focused on re-imagining spaces that serve clients, communities, and end users. A strong advocate for the concept of learning through play, Eric specializes in understanding how families and children interact in outdoor environments. He also embraces digital tools and emerging technologies that enhance communication and bring design ideas to life for clients and constituents. His path into landscape architecture began with a deep love of the outdoors, fostered through monthly camping trips as a Scout. Growing up, he developed his creative chops through arts, crafts, and woodworking, and a drafting class encouraged by his father sparked his interest in spatial reasoning. At Kansas State, his professors helped him recognize the unique blend of science, art, and nature that makes landscape architecture a perfect fit for his passions.
